Yes,

  1. Do a clean install of a new oracle home to be the site for testing your upgrade. Upgrade it to whatever patch level you currently run. Have it owner by another OS account
  2. Make a copy of your database. It is easiest to do this as a cold copy or use rman to do it hot.
  3. Start it in the new Oracle home using a copied initora.
  4. Do your patch
  5. test test test
