Hmm. Daniel sent me an invite yesterday. I signed up. Tested the
account, and then noticed the link to invite other folks. So then I
invited other folks who were able to immediately signup. Dunno.

You get invites after a month or two of using the account.
They are adding people gradually.

You are correct. You actually have to use the account then a bolded

I have a gmail account too - I've had it about a week now. I don't seem to have any way of inviting people.. Do you have to use the mailbox to get that going? I have to admit - I haven't sent or received any mail from/to the mailbox..

Also because other web-based mail accounts don't seem to create happy users, they are looking for alternatives.
