I have the Oracle 6 & 7 version through the 8i version. That is the
line that starts the "Performance and Design" chapter which is chapter
20 in the 6 & 7 version and chapter 40 in the 8i version. I don't have
either the 9i or 10g version.

I still actually have that book (largely because it's where I got the
line =3D
in my sig from) and in that version it quotes George Koch (Oracle7, The
Com=3D
plete Reference) as saying "No major application will run in Third
Normal F=3D
orm". Kevin's book was actually written in 94, but you were pretty
close.
I had a scan through the 10g version of the complete reference, and
can't s=3D
ee that same quote anywhere.

I first saw this in the first editon of the Official Oracle DBA Hanbook,
=3D
published by Oracle Press; the edition which covered Version 6 and the =3D
beginnings of Version 7.(circa 1993) I no longer have that book, but I
=3D
remembered it being in the 8i edition. I found it on page 323, where =3D
it is attributed to ORACLE8: the Complete Reference. I don't know if =3D
it has disappeared from more recent editions.
The reason for bringing this all up is that 10 years ago, this was
reasonab=3D
le
advice. In the systems I have worked with in the last two years, I have
honestly never come accross a situation where denormalizing was ever
needed=3D
.=3D
In fact, we have had several situations where the solution was to
re-normal=3D
ize an old denormalized design.
