I'm not an expert, but doesn't the application make a difference? I mean OLTP vs OLAP vs multi-purpose. And, with the advances in the optimizer, do my users really care that a join takes .003 nano-seconds longer with a normalized design? I think the higher level of data integrity exceeds the performance benefits of de-normalization. But, I know there will be exceptions. Someone please help me out if I'm not thinking correctly.
