I've implemented several Data Guard configurations with 8i on AIX and
Solaris. Data Guard 8i consists merely of ksh-scripts. However, there are
three executables. That worked pretty straight forward. The executables
will prevent you from running it on Linux. However, I think it must be
possible to reverse engineer the functionality of the executables and
rewrite them using Pro*C or OCI.
Otherwise you're right, you have to script standby. OPS doesn't give you the same level of protection: You will run more instances, but still have just one database.
