In my experience you do not want to try the recovery if you are simply trying to recover the database to test from a cold backup. Just skip that step and open the database with resetlogs.

after re-creating the control file,should i,
RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE; (i did not do this.i am not sure whether to do this in this case !! )
before
ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
