I never recreate the controlfile when a backup version is available. Maybe it's a bias from starting out before recreation was an option.

Is it possible that a tablespace was already in backup mode before the backup process started?

I think it's better copying the control file to a trace file, creating new control file for the cloned DB using the trace file, and doing recover until cancel.
