I guess it's the subtle point again of avoiding database access when it's not necessary :).

Since I started work on 5.1.22, I have of course always loved export, import and sql*Loader. But one thing I never quite understood was 1) Oracle's insistence on putting all important messages on a screen or in a flat ASCII file and 2) Oracle's resistance to making the information in the flat ASCII files available in a repository where it could be queried systematically.

Other examples include 10046, 10053 and the alert log.
