You can also use one of my favorites, ncftp. It add extras in addition to the standard unix/linux ftp program,

• giving you a description of how long the download, the speed and etc (the information you expect from gui ftp client)
• autocomplete arguments using the "tab" key. I have directories that are incredibly long and this helped.

Regardless, you can use mput or mget to fetch everything in the directory.

How about turning off the prompt and doing an mput or mget? Will that meet your needs?
