Fascinating discussion - thanks to all who have contributed to a most readable thread.
1 - on books - I grab any I can, on basis (and experience) that no one text will answer every question. 'Two heads better than one', etc. Then apply ones' judgement.
2 - on Date. If you can stand the somewhat hectoring style of Fabian Pascal (which I find quite tedious, I'm afraid), Chris Date has a number of papers and discussion notes on Pascal's web site (www.dbdebunk.com).
