A lot of books do not give even the rationales that have been given in this thread. I would go to Borders or Barnes & Noble, look at several beginning Oracle 9i books, and look up how they explain database creation. Many books just skip over important things like that, out of laziness. There are a lot of bad Oracle books out there. We ought to have a thread on most useful and most usless Oracle books.

Well, it is sort of a chicken & egg thing. When you issue the "create = database" command the system tablespace gets created for you at the same = time. You can't create the system tablespace anyway else. Mind you, = you can drop it, with subsequent catastrophic results. Once the "create = database" command finishes you can create any other tablespace(s) you = want. I'd strongly recommend either a beginners class on Oracle = followed by the beginners and intermediate DBA classes or the Oracle for = Dummy's book at Amazon.com. You need a basic understanding of what your = talking about, otherwise Mladen is going to have your lunch.

Hie All,
I would like to find out from you what should be created first between = the
database and the tablespace? The book I managed to lay my hands on does = not
say, and I'm lost as what should I create first. Also does the database use the same datafile as the tablespace?

TIA
