Upgrade DB with no downtime

Hi,
Is there a way to leverage Oracle Data Guard or any other Oracle technology to perform a database upgrade from 8i to 9i or 9i to 10G without any downtime? Currently it takes us anywhere from 8-12hrs to perform an upgrade from 8i to 9i or 9i to 10G. The databases would remain unavailable during the upgrade. Ideally, if possible, we would like the database to be available during the upgrade.
