Actually, you will only need a level 0 backup, online or cold, to be able to do point in time recover from the time of the level 0 forward.

We were able to do a -- change archivelog all validate.
This makes the rman catalog aware of nonexistent archive log files. These files still do not exist but RMAN quits complaining. You still need a cold backup from that point forward or a recovery could be toast.
