A simple database upgrade could be (8.1.7 database to 9.2.0) :

Make sure SYSTEM tablespace has at least 150MB or half of its current size available free. Backup the database.
Run DBUA. Fix issues identified by DBUA. Upgrade DB. Backup the database.
