Well, if he likes Sun Support. he's in for a pleasant surprise with HP support. Solaris is one of the proprietary OS's still running around and popular so no doubt it will be supported for some time. But the trend towards non proprietary software is definelty out there & I firmly believe that Linux will be supported much longer than Solaris, HP-UX, or dare I say it, Windows!!

We bought SCO when it was still SCO, not Caldera with a SCO nameplate. The current OS from SCO are definately NOT in the running.
I've been very happy with my three Red Hat systems, even the RH 6.2 system that needs to be upgraded as soon as I can find some time to do it right. Only problem is a problem with a new firewall - and the Unixware system is having the same problem, so it isn't Red Hat. The SA's arguments for going to SPARC/Solaris is that he likes Sun's support, and believes that Oracle will continue to support it longer.

John,
Personal opinion here, but for one I would NEVER endorse the use of anything from SCO. They've burned that bridge very badly in my view with their assault against Linux. So I would recommend a Compaq/HP Dl series running Red Hat. Their not cost prohibitive, around $10K with two processors, HP support of them on the hardware side is very good, and their damned reliable. Red Hat is going to be around for a VERY long time, in my view, and will probably become Oracle's premier OS pretty soon. Heck, right now if your running Red Hat and Oracle 9i you've already got a RACable setup with no add-ons.
