Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: LMT SYSTEM Tablespace? - SUMMARY
I have all of my tablespaces now in LMT, including tmp and undo. There is
really no reason not to use LMT over DMT in 9i, from everything I read.

In 9iR2 "execute
sys.DBMS_SPACE_ADMIN.TABLESPACE_MIGRATE_TO_LOCAL('SYSTEM'); "
will migrate SYSTEM DMT to LMT, provided all the tablespaces in
the database are already LMT.
There are other restrictions also (rollback, temp space, etc), for me it's not worth converting... :-)

Stephen
I hadn't considered the migration aspect mainly because I always try to
avoid the migration aspect whenever possible. My strong preference, backed
by people on this list that are a whole lot wiser than me, is to
create the
database in 9i, then export/import. But I agree that if I
migrated, I would
stick with DMT, and you may not have a choice anyway (I don't recall a
method for converting a system tablespace from DMT to LMT).
Part of my rationale for going LMT on 9i system tablespace is
that since
Oracle creates them that way by default, that configuration is probably
tested more.

Thanks to all who replied. Ruth, Dennis, Tom & Hemant.
Excerpts from the replies are below.
Based on this, I think we are proceeding as we have been. That is to say, databases that are upgraded are keeping SYSTEM as DMT and new installs will get LMT for SYSTEM. For all other tablespaces, we are moving to LMT.
Thanks!

I see no good reason why to change the SYSTEM tablespace to an LMT. I
say
wait until Oracle says it is required and then do it. Probably in
10G.
It's working as it is, so I would leave it alone.

I use LMT SYSTEM in 9.2.0.2 and 9.2.0.4 on Tru64 and Solaris without
any issues

Yes, in 9i LMT is the default for system tablespace and if that is LMT
you cannot create a
DMT. Haven't tried it, just quoting.

In earlier versions the system tablespace was not supposed to be
locally
managed. In 9.2.0.x you can and probably should make it locally
managed.
I just did this on my production databases.
