Paula - I think you are correct. In my environment I just use RMAN to back up to disk. I haven't found an advantage to having RMAN back up the archive logs. Anyway it sounds like Ruth has provided some good advice that is closer to your actual issue.

I don't think that is quite true. If your system admin. blows the box away and you are doing a restore - so no online redo - then without using recover database you don't get the archivelog files restored for recovery unless you restore the archivelog files separate - right? My thought was that recover database in this cause would restore necessary archive files.

Paula - If RMAN recovery encounters problems, I exit RMAN and just log into Oracle (svrmgrl in 8i, sqlplus in 9i) and perform the recovery there. I believe that for recovery RMAN is just issuing the same commands to the RDBMS. Dennis Williams

Restoring - restore says it is complete but recovery keeps failing or hanging:

connect target $TARGET@$DBNAME

run {

execute script alloc_all_tapes;

restore controlfile to '/data/oradata/CSTAT/ctrl/control01.ctl';

allocate channel d1 type disk;

replicate controlfile from '/data/oradata/CSTAT/ctrl/control01.ctl';

sql 'alter database mount';

restore database until time

"to_date('JAN 27 2004 12:00:00','MON DD YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";

sql 'alter database open resetlogs';

execute script rel_all_tapes;

}
