in school i'm actually calculating how many blocks are needed in different types of queries. different search algorithms used by the CBO.(actually calculating our own cost)
its a big of an overkill. intenals is nice, but unless you are going to code or design a database, there is only so much you really need to know. you can get bogged down in these details and not focus on what is really important.
