Or try to truss sqlplus and see where it is attempting to open the afiedt.buf file. Alternatively, convince your SA to assign you uid=0. That way, you'll have no problems with file protection. This is what I have in mind:

A typical /etc/passwd file entry looks something like this:         

        rpc:x:32:32:Portmapper RPC user:/:/sbin/nologin

User rpc has uid=32 and group=32. If your SA makes the entry look like this:

        rpc:x:0:32:Portmapper RPC user:/:/sbin/nologin

you will no longer have any problems with file protection. It is customary to duck and take cover when you suggest something like this to a system administrator.
