Well, if you go back to my original note, you'll find that I *did* have a current init.ora file to fall back on. After I screwed up my spfile, I restarted the instance using my init.ora file.
What I'm ashamed of is not knowing that I could have issued a CREATE PFILE command with my instance sitting idle. That important fact has somehow eluded me until now.
