On Mandrake 9.2, I had to set LD_ASSUME_KERNEL to "2.4.1" because of
the NPTL (threads & glibc). In other words, yes, I did have to use some
acrobatics. On the other hand, to install cooker, I have only to boot
the system off the installation CD and the installer takes over. I
don't have to do things like
"modprobe tulip;ifonfig eth0;dchpd eth0" (I have Linksys Etherfast
10/100 card, which has the "tulip" chipset)."mkfs -t ext3 /dev/hda7"
and alike. There are some things that are better made by a GUI installer. My next Saturday is devoted to playing with oracle and I hate to waste weekends for installing linux. Installing Gentoo is the best way to waste a whole weekend.
