I've actually read it several times over<grin>. At first, when I saw all those diagrams with lines and arrows, I must admit, I entertained a few doubts. However, the deeper I got into the book, the more I began to appreciate Dan's method. By the time I got done, I found myself heartily wishing for a few tuning problems of my own, just so I could give his method a go on some real-life problems.
Dan's is the only SQL tuning book I'm aware of that actually gives a single "method" that you can follow to a solution. Most books I've seen tend to help you find a problem SQL statement, look at it's execution plan, and then you're on your own when it comes to guessing a solution.
Oh, one last comment. Of all the books I've edited, only two have moved me to the point of writing a foreword. Dan's is one of them.
