You are right, that v$statname is not needed when querying v$sysstat,
since v$sysstat has "name" column.
But, if you look at v$sesstat:
SQL> describe v$sesstat;
Name
SID STATISTIC# VALUE
It doesn't have "name" column, and that's where you'll need v$statname to find the name of statistic.
