RE: alter session

That only affects how Oracle finds objects. If for instance you would have to access dba_users normally as sys.dba_users then using the alter session command means you can drop the 'sys.' portion thereof. It has no affect on your priviledges. Down side is that if you then want to reference one of your personal tables you have to say so.
