Oracle-L: 8.1.7 + redhat AS 2.1 = trouble

Are there know binutils or other issues when installing 8.1.7 on redhat AS 2.1?

Attempts to run genclntsh keep
getting undefined references in libc.so.6?

I can't find anything on Metalink or google about running AS 2.1 and 8.1.7 together.
