Its worse than that - he's dead Jim. Ooops sorry wrong reference.

The obnoxiously worded licence agreement states that std edition can only be licensed on a machine 'capable' of a maximum of 4 processors. If you have 2 processors in a chassis that can take 8, the agreement says that you need EE. There is also a RAM limit IIRC 4gb.

You may guess that I object to this stance. My reasons are

  1. You should licence according to functional need not horsepower of box. N archive log destinations is not a function of Y processors.
  2. There is no difference between machines with 2 processors in a 2 processor chassis and 2 processors in an 8 processor chassis.
  3. Its all too expensive anyway. EE is the best marketing reason on the planet to adopt MSSQL.
  4. I don't believe that any reasonable court will uphold the "ah but you *could* put 32 processors in there at some point I'll charge you 300% more for what you actually have" argument.
  5. reasonable courts may not actually exist.
