SQL-Plus is a little like the old interactive fiction games (text-based games, like 'Adventure' or 'Zork'). You only need to type enough of some words so that they are unambiguous. See the SQL-Plus User's Guide, "command reference" (chapter 8 for 8.1.7, chapter 13 for 9.2.0) for details.

I'm afraid I don't have anything add to the original question, I was going to suggest the obvious "grant PLUSTRACE" but I reviewed the thread and saw that was already dealt with.
