As much as I hate to disagree with the DBA Goddess... The database will not HANG. A more appropriate term is that further processing is halted until it is able to archive the redo log before it begins to overwrite it. You will receive a message in the alert log, I don't recall the exact text, but it is along the lines of archiver stuck or unable to archive a log.
