No, See the 8.1.7.4 patch set documentation and do it with a COLD database on the source side.

Subject: DB shift
Hi All
We are planning to Shift our Db to a new hardware(having RAIDs).
The OS is exactly same on both the servers.
Presently Oracle Version is 8.1.7.0.0
In the new server Oracle 8.1.7.4 is installed.
What I am planning is to Shift the DB by copying the data files
from old to new server.
Renaming them in mount stage if required.
For the Oracle version change (upgrade) will there be any
problem?
So that export/import will be the only option.
Thanks for your valuable input.
Regards
