Failed to archive log#...

I am getting a significant number of messages in my alert log which look like:

Failed to archive log# <n> seq# <nn>

If I read further down in the log, I may see several failures for the same log and sequence and then finally a message saying:

Completed archiving log# <n> seq# <nn>

What do these messages mean?
