du -s <folder_name> will list the number of blocks in the folder. If you take this number and multiply it by your OS block size (usually 512 for Unix) you will get the number of bytes in your folder. You can also use du -s * to get a the size of all folders in a directory.
Just to avoid confusion they are generally called directories in Unix.
