I agree - use the same user.

Log in and edit the oratab. Create an entry for your new home. Logout, then log back in and select that entry. Now your environment is set for the install.
Rename the orainst.loc to something else, as previously mentioned in another post.
Be sure you select a new orainventory so as to not overwrite the current one.

When you apply patches at a later date, you just need to remember to switch the orainst.loc files around for the appropriate home.

I did this thread a few weeks back. I found it much easier to install in the same base using the same userid. Then all you have to do is set env vars depending on what you want to work on.
