RSYNC

Is it possible to RSYNC open (but in backup mode) datafiles? I'm not sure if RSYNC can handle open files correctly. Is it possible the backup will be such a "mess" that applying redo cannot recover it?

I tried it a few times on a test instance and they restored okay but perhaps I've just been lucky - I don't want to rely on pure luck for backups! (although I guess some is always need :)).

Thanks
- Bill.

PS. Will be looking at RMAN soon-ish depending on how time allows.
