Alex - No, you don't need to know the location of each file. But the directory must exist. Otherwise RMAN will attempt to restore a file to that location, and fail. Not a big deal, you can then create that directory (or link is fine), and restart RMAN. Most databases place files at just a few locations, so shouldn't be a big deal.

Hi Folks,

Many thanks for your help. I just want to add a few more things: 1. I am staying with RH Linux Adv Server 2.0. 2. rman doesn't have the recovery catalog.

Q: Do I need to know exact location of all files of crushed database before I start recovery?

Alex.
