Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Large databases
"Access is more front-end database yes, Access is known to be a
front-end to other databases with a very rich user interface."
I know...."Isn't THAT rich." is said often when discussing Access db's..
I personally think deploying Access in a corporate environment is a large
mistake.
People lock up undocumented business rules faster than you can say "WTF!"
when Access hits the desktops.
Its a systems management nightmare, a productivity killer as untrained users become "duhvelopers". How many people have had to figure out what some wacko was doing their Access databases after they have been fired or quit?? How many times does someone come by and say "...can you help me get some data into Access for some reports?"
As a DBA I am very reluctant to grant people access to data for the purpose of using Access on the desktop.
The only thing I would use it for would be for quick prototyping of a application concept. Even then only if no other choice was available. Its a short term benefit app that causes longterm major problems that ultimatley cost BIG BUCKS...
It's a pariah.
