Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> Re: Shifting of Servers - Practical Problems
It is not a new concept. All big companies like AT&T have their Data Centers
all over USA and SA's are not located there. However they have close
cordination with operators in DATA CENTERS. In my previous assigments with
AT&T our data center was in Orlando , our SA's were located in South New
Jersey and in Orlando and all other IT team was in Central NJ. What you need
a close cordination, and weekly or as needed conference calls between DBA,
SA's and Data Center guys....Worked fine

Hi All
Our Mgmt.Team is insisting that the Unix Servers with
databases on them
being shifted to a different location (200+ miles
away) retaining the servers
on the network ,while the team members are not being
moved.
Some practical problems that come to my mind are: If
the Machine
needs to be Physically switched off and switched on OR
tape
needs to mounted for bkp/restore then the SA has to
travel 200+
miles; Another issue is , if there is power outage or
maintenance
requirement and the server goes down or needs to be
shutdown cleanly, turned off then too the SA has to
travel.
>From the DBA point of view (for install)
, the CD's either have to be placed in the drive or
the contents
ftp'd and then dbca/dbassist need to be invoked. Not
sure how the
response will be in this case over the network.
The developers are connecting using Terminal emulation
software installed
in their PCs. Any other practical issues?.
TIA
