Lucky you Jared. Apparently you haven't had to deal with some of the new
breed of developers that don't understand RI, write their COTS packages in
their garage using SQL Server then automagically expect it will scale. I
think it must be a matter of the organization you work for. If you are
lucky enough to work for one that is willing to pay well for good developers
and to train them and keep them - God Bless Ya. If your not - don't feel
bad - you are not alone and you are definitely picking up some good skills
in tuning SQL.

Deborah,
The problem is that you are working with a duhveloper.
DBA's don't generally need to tune a developers code.

We have a consultant doing some work at our site and he claims that in
most shops the DBA's have the responsibility of tuning duhvelopers code. I
find that hard to believe. I was wondering if maybe I am out of
touch.....do most of you also tune all your duhvelopers code??? I can see
working together with them if there are issue but have the responsibility
of tuning all developer code....EGAD when would I have time to be a DBA. ;
