It would have a chance if it was produced by Microsoft, but not SUN.
SUN has squandered the opportunities with Java (licensing policies got
the companies up in arms, now they're seriously thinking about adopting C#.
Microsoft has gone to ISO, in contrast to SUN, the specs are there, anyone
can create a C# compiler according to specs), Netscape browser, StarOffice
(free version + expensive commercial product, free version being of much
lower quality) and some other products. SUN is a schizophrenic company which
cannot decide whether they want to be a software company or a hardware
company. I used to have Slowaris on one of my PCs for a long time (2.5.4,
2.6
Solaris 7), but there isn't much software available. No oracle, no RPM (only
pkgad/rm/info), no free compiler, they're still pushing that lousy CDE of
theirs and there isn't DVD burner support. Intel Solaris is as dangerous to
Linux as Elmer Fudd is to Bugs Bunny. Slowaris is a great operating system
if installed on wabbits.

The problem I have with the supported versions of Linux is that none of them are free. What's the point then? I'd rather go with Solaris then, which is FREE. And with the new Sun 1Us (<$3K!), it's got the potential to be a Win/Lin killer, especially for Oracle servers, IMHO.
