Nuala,

A Server is only as good as the apps you have installed on it - The more iffy apps you have installed on it, the more likely you'll have memory leaks and crashes etc.
We've had an Oracle 8.1.7 server up and running for as long as I can remember without the need to put if offline - For problematic performance, check your SQL, normalize tables (if necessary), or check your Java App - and your version of JRE.

Hi all,

There was a posting recently about shutting down servers (due to net-work problem with my email folder I can n't access the particular emails)

And there were some interesting points made about NOT shutting down servers due to queries stored in SQL pool etc....

But what I would like to hear about rules of practise regarding shutting down the servers due to memory leakage.

We are running a 8.1.6 server on NT along with a Java application. We've had performance problems recently and in the past this was due to deadlocks - we've resolved this matter but sometimes shutting down the server does seem to improved performance for the short term. I'm also going to look into rebuilding indexes as well to see if this might be a problem. But one of the people that I work with says that servers should be shutdown on a regular basis due to memory leakage. Is this true? and Is there any other reason why you would shut down servers on a regular basis?
