For each session there will be a moment in time when the first sort has to be performed. At that moment, memory is allocated for performing that sort (sort area). The size of the sort area grows incrementally until sufficient memory has been allocated to perform the sort or until it reaches the maximum as specified by SORT_AREA_SIZE.
