Mail Transfer Agent, its the program that uses SMTP to send or recieve mail. Examples:
Sendmail
Courier
Postfix
Exim
qmail
MS Exchange
Don't confuse this with an MUA (mail user agent) which allows you to compose and read email without using telnet manually. Examples:
Mutt
Pine
Mozilla
Outlook
If you're getting smtp errors, perhaps your MTA is misconfigured, unavailable, overloaded, etc. SMTP stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.
