Firstly ,
make sure that when you shutdown, the database is actually shutdown ... my guess is the db isn't shutting down.
(Thanks to Kyle) use http://oraperf.sourceforge.net/SGA/sgaid.sh to see
which shared memory segment is used by which instance.
