APPEND came in at 8.0 so it will work there.

The hint can be very useful, but it works "best" with unindexed tables (that are set to NOLOGGING). If tables are indexed, then you still might get some benefit but the gains are not as dramatic.

Of course, anything in NOLOGGING mode often requires a rethink of your backup strategy.
