Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: TAR and Linux info
Stephen,
All of your questions are solid diagnostic inquiries. I have not
changed anything on my backup script and it is a simple TAR -cvf
/dev/st0 files...
and I can read the other tapes okay. I can read the first file header
on the tape okay. I tried a different tape drive and received the same
errors. The tape has gone sour and I am recreation the tablespaces to
load the data into.
Thanks for your suggestions.

It might be a tape problem, but I think it is unusual for a tape to be
this
hosed without errors being generated when the backup was created. If
it is
known that a backup was created without errors on this tape, and the
tape
has not been mishandled since then, then my first question would be: At
what
density was the tape created, and are you reading from the tape at
that
density?
When you finally get to the point that you can locate the "files" on
the
tape, then other questions come up, such as:
Was the tape actually written in tar format? Are additional parameters required, such as blocksize, etc.?
