Paula,
If your local Oracle User Group isn't giving enough attention to Oracle, then what are they giving attention to? Is it more developer or applications focused? Or so much of a vendor controlled group that they don't do much besides advertise for the vendors products?
Here in AZ, we appreciate and value vendor involvement, but we also control it. Vendor speakers are given a set of guidelines so they know what we do and don't expect. We are also fortunate to have the involvement of several people that are well connected to the Oracle world and are able to regularly help us get good speakers.
We are continuosly striving to get more local involvement as that is an area that is often a great source of knowledge. Sometimes a new speaker may not have the presentation skills or dynamic personality of Rich Niemic (I only cite his name as an example of good presentation skills, not necessarily always technical ones) but frequently, there are local people doing things with Oracle that will give you new ideas.
Also, we have frequently been accused of being more DBA-focused and so we have tried very hard to include more developer content. We try to have an equal number of developer and DBA presentations and our members can split up and attend whichever best meets their needs.

Cute.
"What I needed to forget about tuning once I got my Cert". I already
contacted the one in town, thanks. I just don't think they give
enough
attention to Oracle and get the good speakers in - perhaps I can help
with
that.
What about the following:
"Why would an 8 year Oracle veteran get their certificate. How you can
get
one with the least amount of time and money and why the upgrade exam
is
really the one to study for from everything seen." Also, "oracle
myths
debunked." - Wait there was something done on that. or "How to deal
effectively with COTS dujour so that you can sleep at night."

Paula,
I just did a search at ioug.org and it looks like there are 5 Oracle
User Groups in FL. (Guessing based on your e-mail address :) It would
be much easier to get involved with one of those that starting a new
one
that would be competing for members and vendor support.
Take a look at ioug.org.
Click User Group from the left side of the screen.
Click Local/Region Contact Information.
Choose FL from the State drop-down box and click Search from the green
bar towards the top of the page.
Try to get ahold of someone on that list from the closest group to you
and see when they meet. If you would like to get involved, I know
that
many user groups value volunteers to help put on events (sign in
sheet,
greeter, snack coordinator, etc.) Better yet, prepare a presentation
("What I needed to forget about tuning once I got my Cert").
Good luck

Guys,
I wish to setup an IOUG group in my city. I wish to do this so I can
bring
in some of the more relevant training available for Oracle DBA's in
this
area - Mogens, Cary, Robert, etc. Any advice on the best way to do
this
from folks who have - quickest way to get it up and running, generate
interest, arrange speakers, funding..... Perhaps working with local
vendor?
