What's your goal?
If you are writing scripts then use perl or python. IMO, python is more
maintainable when your codebase gets bigger. If you're writing a system or
application python is still good.
If your goal is to get on the hype then go java, xml, .net, and throw in a webservice API. Also, you don't need to know how these work, but you do need to know how to use the wizards that can generate code for these.
