Terry,
RMAN should be always be at, or newer than, the version of any target database being backed up. So, yes, you need to upgrade your recovery catalog prior to any other databases.

I am trying to create an instance on Oracle 8.1.7.4.0 (Solaris 5.8). I am trying to run RMAN to back it up, but the RMAN instance is still at 8.1.7.0.0. I am getting a bunch of errors. Is it possible to run RMAN in this scenario, or does the RMAN instance need to be upgraded. I'd check Metalink, but it is down for maintenance.
