NULL storage in CHAR fields

Hey all,

In 8.1.7, does Oracle reserve (x) bytes for a CHAR(x) field if the field is NULL? A dev wants to NON NULL a key field, and I'd like to better be able to predict the effects on the table of inserting a space (indexes have already been considered).
