  1. You can have two databases with different character sets in the same computer. you may have problems running local jobs, but I do not know Solaris to comment on this.
  2. according to metalink doc#: 119164.1, UTF8 is a superset of US7ASCII so you can convert your database to use UTF8 without problems. There is a reference to doc# 66320.1 in this document. The 66320.1 document will explain to you how to change the character set. It worked for me in 8.1.6 on NT.
