Codifying keys

Hi Oracle Gurus,

Is there a difference in terms of performance or any in using alpha numeric codes for employee codes such as EM00001 rather than just 00001? Please note that this is the key of the table. I am using Oracle9i.

Any input is hightly appreciated.
